We considered Herculaneum but decided on Pompeii in the end. We went today (Sunday), and here's how we got on: left early (7am) and had a really good run, arrived by 9.30am and parked easily at what seemed to be the main parking place but was also a campsite. Parking cost €2.50/hr, so a bit steep but could have been worse, and it was only 2 mins walk from the entrance. There was no queue for tickets to get into the site, and we had a great day exploring. In the end we took a small picnic, which I think was the right decision as the food places all seemed to be at one end of the site. We supplemented it with ice creams bought there, particularly yummy when eaten in the sunshine sitting in the forum. Journey back took about the same time, so it was a long day but definitely do-able as a day trip. We had 4 kids with us (ages 6, 6, 4, 1.5) and they loved it too.

Thanks for all the advice, we had a fab time.

that sounds lovely! You made really good time as well. I have always thought it was too far for a day trip but obviously not.
