visit to Pompeii - advice please

We are planning a day trip to Pompeii with friends who are visiting soon. Has anyone been? I am wondering whether it would be best to take a picnic (and have to carry it) or get food there - but is there a bar or restaurant within the site? We will have kids with us and so won't want to walk for miles to find lunch.

Any tips gratefully received, Alison

Hi Alison

We were there a couple of years ago. There was at least 1 restaurant in the site, didn't eat there so can't comment on prices /quality but at least it saves carrying things around. There are also lots of food stalls around the entrances/exits. It is pretty well set up for tourists in that respect.

I am jealous, would love to go back! Can you report back as would be interested to know how you find it doing it all in a day? Have a great time.

hi alison

i cant answer your questions about places to eat etc. but will offer this advice. many many people who have been to both pompeii and herculaneum (including italians) will tell you that herculaneum is far better than pompeii...better preserved...thereby better mosaics, better murals...better better better. i can only say that many people have told me this..as ive only seen pompeii. have a look for yourself :D

quite a few places to grab food there Alison but not the cheapest! I remember they did have lovely lemon and orange spremuta stands for sale outside made from the wonderful citrus fruits down in that neck of the woods.

you could take a picnic and eat it there - there is a modern restaurant in the centre which could give you food. The lemon drink was superb as it was hot when i was there in late september this year. Sunday it was free admission for us but i am not sure if that is the norm. get involved in a tour as they know what you want to know.
