Purchasing wood for home heating

Hi all, has anyone had experience buying wood for burning at home for heating? I am living outside Rome in a farmhouse and I don't speak great Italian. I want to buy a stack of wood for the hearth. I will probably be able to go and muddle it out myself as it can't be too complicated but it always helps to have some advance information to pad out my poor language skills.
  • Do you buy the wood by weight?
  • Can you collect and take it away or is it delivered?
  • Is it just one type of bulk wood or do you buy tinder as well?
  • I have passed a large dirty yard selling "pellets". Is this compressed wood pellets for a pellet stove or is it something else?
  • Any ideas on what the price is??
  • Any other information or negotiation tips?

Wood is usually purchased by weight but how do you assess that you received a tonne as wood drys out and gets lighter usually.

I would have thought most wood yards would deliver. Its not like most small cars can carry a lot in their boot.. :)

You want to make sure that the wood you order contains hardwoods and not softwood. Harder wood burns better and produces less tar than softwood. You should be able to buy fire lighters to start the fire or kindling and paper.

Go in and see about the pellets - they are probably compressed paper.

Get some prices from various yards is the best bet.

Is your fire open or does it have doors? The best fires are the stoves with doors which produce more heat and can be used to heat water and even cook a nice stew.

Is there no wood on the farmhouse land? You could obtain your own if the tree was large enough and you knew someone with a chainsaw.

Good luck

May be worth doing a check on the weight of the first load you buy - a friend had a bad experience with a wood yard which had two sets of scales: one accurate, and one which was rigged to weigh heavy for the people they thought they could cheat.

Hi,

.you buy wood by weight-quintale, which is 100 kg.

.depending on how much wood you need.If you need wood for the occasional use, then you could use the boot of your car to bring the wood home. Large amounts are best delivered and usually the delivery is included in the price per quintale.

.ask for quercia( oak) which is the best calorific wood. Castagno(chestnut) is ok, but it is less favoured than oak and certainly do not get it if you have an open fire as it tends to spray fire bits when it burns.Avoid fur trees(cipressi) wood as it contains resin which clogs up your chimney.

. I believe pellets are what people feed a pellet stove, which is not a fireplace and does not give you hot water like a termocamino

.I paid E 12.50 per quintale this summer, prices are higher in winter and usually the wood is wetter and burns slower.Check whether the wood was kept under cover. Wetter wood obviously weighs more.

. You can get little bundles made of chestnut wood which are good for starting the fire. Also, collect cardboard and paper, which helps in starting it as well as the small cubes saturated with liquid gas-Diavolina.

Enjoy your fire-it is a great feeling sitting next to it and feeling warm and cosy.

And lastly, you can never be sure whether they cheated you on the weight as you can not weigh the wood yourself at home!

You can weigh each piece on your bathroom scales and add it all up!

Of course it may not be worth the hassle for €12.50/100kg......
