Bus, Metro & Tram Services in Rome & Lazio, Italy

Details and contact information on the regional and city bus, tram and metro transport systems in the Lazio region.

ATAC (Agenzia per la Mobilità del Comune di Roma) manages all public transport in Rome. This includes the Met.Ro underground system and Trambus. ATAC shops with information and tickets are in most stations.

Buses and Trams in Rome

Trambus is the local public transportation company in Rome.

There are two companies providing bus service in Rome: COTRAL (Compagnia Trasporti Laziali) and ATAC.

In Rome, the main bus stations are: Anagnina, Lepanto, Ponte Mammolo, Termini, Laurentina, Magliana, Santa Rubra, Tiburtina. There are also bus stations in Rieto, Latina, Viterbo and Frosinone.

There are six tram routes running in Rome, and although they serve nearly all parts of the city, most of the lines serve eastern Rome to the east of the Termini railway station. New environmentally friendly trams have recently been introduced to the Rome tram system.

  • Night buses operate from 00:10-05:30 (follow the "N" signs)
The Metro (Underground Subway System) in Rome

Met.Ro (Metro Roma) is the Rome metro service with: Line A (orange), Line B (blue) running through the city. There are ongoing railworks and delays can be expected.

  • Service on Lines A and B runs Sunday to Friday from approximately 05:30-23:30

Regional rail lines connect Rome - Lido, Rome - Pantano and Rome - Viterbo. 

Animals on the Metro

Animals (dogs, cats and birds) may travel on lines A and B and on the first and last carriages of the regional rail lines provided they are restrained (in a carry cage or muzzled and on a leash). A full price ticket is required. Note: Guide dogs (seeing-eye dogs) travel free. 

Bicycles, baby buggies/push chairs and musical instruments

One bike is allowed per passenger, payment is required unless the passenger holds a Metrebus pass. Groups travelling with more than five bicycles must make arrangements (and payment) 24 hours in advance:

Baby carriages/buggies are allowed but must not block the passageways.

One musical instrument is allowed per passenger provided it is no bigger than 150x50x20 cm.

Metro lost and found

Buying a Ticket

Tickets are sold in tobacconists and newsstands in Rome and Lazio, in ATAC shops and automated ticket machines in stations.

The integrated ticket, Metrebus, allows the ticket holder access to all public transport in Rome (excluding the direct rail link between Termini and Fiumicino Airport). Tickets must be bought before the start of the journey, from any metro station or authorised vendor.

Season tickets (monthly or annual) give access to all public transport services within the Metropolitan area of Rome: 

  • CIS (weekly) tickets are valid for seven days on all public transport within the metropolitan area of Rome
  • BIG (daily) tickets are valid for one day
  • BIT (75-minute) tickets are valid for up to 75 minutes on ATAC transport for one trip on the metro and one trip on any metro-type train in second class

The Roma Pass provides three days' access to most museums and monuments as well as most public transport in Rome. They can be purchased in Tourist Information Offices (Punti Informativi Turistici - PIT), all participating museums and monuments as well as in other locations.

Ticket Validation

All tickets for transportation must be validated before the start of the journey, using the validation machines located at the entry gates of the metro stations, within the entrance area of all rail stations and at the rear of buses and trams. During the journey, a ticket inspector may ask to see the ticket; a passenger without one may be fined.
