High Days and Holidays

Every country in the world has its special national days off -  some have a lot more than others! For most people, these days are something to look forward to, when everything comes to a stop and you can enjoy the pleasure of a shorter work week or a long weekend.

Local Festivals

Typically, holidays mark a significant national historic event or a religious festival. As we enter the fourth quarter of the year, find out which holidays - giorno festivo - are still in store for you; see the AngloINFO INFOrmation Page Public Holidays in Italy.

In some countries, a holiday which falls on a weekend is made up for with a day off during the week - this is not the case in Italy. However, when a public holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, many people (and smaller and family-run businesses) take the Friday or Monday off, turning the weekend into a four-day holiday. This is known as making the bridge, to "fare il ponte".

In addition to the national holidays, each region has a full calendar of festivals. Find out about local festivals with the INFOrmation Page Festivals in Lazio.

Later this month the Heritage festival - a Europe-wide event - begins, and come October, many towns and villages across Italy will be hosting special events and running guided tours at their own local places of historical and cultural interest . To find events, see the AngloINFO What's On Guide or look out for local information from the Ministero per i Beni e le Attivitą Culturali website.
